Book Review: A Court of Mist and Fury by Sarah J. Maas

The second book in the ACOTAR series by Sarah J. Maas, A Court of Mist and Fury somehow outranks the first book. Check out my full review of A Court of Mist and Fury below to see just how much I loved it!

Book Information

Feyre is now high fae. She is back from the dead and not sure how to feel about her new life. Not only that, but she is trying to overcome the trauma of being stuck under the mountain for so long and tortured by Amarantha. Tamlin doesn’t seem to know how to make her feel better, but he also won’t allow her to leave the grounds of the house. Feeling trapped and alone right before her wedding to Tamlin, Rhysand comes to make sure Feyre’s side of the bargain is upheld. So as she goes to the night court with him and learns more about the new world she is a part of, she learns that Tamlin might not be who she needs, and that Amarantha wasn’t the biggest threat that they have to face.

Review | Heidi Dischler

So much happened in this book that it literally feels like I’m flipping through pages in my mind to remember what happened when. I will say, though, that I loved every second of it.

The second book somehow turned out to be SO much better than the first. Feyre really grew into herself as high fae and you see more of her original hardcore personality shining through. Rhysand becomes a much more prominent character in this book and I absolutely loved it. Basically the only character you get to see from the first book for this one is Feyre. You still get a little of Lucian and Tamlin, but it’s maybe the first ten to twenty percent of the book. Everything after that is newer characters who made the story so much more entertaining.

The romance in this novel also got a lot better. Just how the first book set it up, you kind of suspect that Rhys will be a contender for Feyre’s heart and you see a lot more of that in this book. That’s all I’m gonna say on that subject, though.

Spoilers ahead.

Okay okay, so there’s a lot to digest here. First I knew from the way Rhys’ character was set up in the first book that he was one of the good guys. I also hoped he’d have a bigger part to play and boy was I happy in this novel!! Tamlin became an epic jerk and Rhys was there to save Feyre. Rhys also happens to be her mate, which I personally felt was a little of a disappointment because I would have liked something a little less inevitable and more natural than a mating bond. It makes it seem less real in my opinion. I do think Sarah J. Maas really ruined Tamlin’s whole character, though. I don’t see even a shred of him the way he was from the first book.

Overall this novel was super fast paced and amazing. I liked this one way better than ACOTAR and thought that the story progressed well. Now on to A Court of Wings and Ruin!
