Book Review: A Flicker in the Dark by Stacy Willingham

With mysteries, distrust, and a serial killer, my A Flicker in the Dark review will tell you everything you need to know about Stacy Willingham’s novel that is sure to have your mind racing until the very end.

Book Information

Chloe Davis is a successful psychologist telling her patients how to handle their demons. The funny thing about that, though, is she can’t seem to handle her own demons.

Almost twenty years ago, her father was convicted of killing six teenage girls in cold blood. Now, in present day, someone is killing teenage girls again. But with her father behind bars and problems of her own, Chloe isn’t sure who to trust. She knows one thing for sure, though: she has to find out who is killing these girls before they strike again.

Review | Heidi Dischler

Alright, so I’m not gonna lie, this book gave me a run for my money. But I also may have guessed the killer at the very beginning of the book….

Obviously the writing and plotting for this novel are superb.  It really was a great murder mystery novel. I just happened to guess exactly who did it before the novel really even got started. If I’m not the only one, then I’ll say that the plotting wasn’t great, but most people say that they had no idea what would happen at the end.

As far as the characters go, Chloe has some serious issues. Like, she needs therapy super bad, which, of course, is ironic because she was a psychologist. I also genuinely liked her fiancé, Daniel. His character seemed to be one of the better built ones. Chloe’s brother, Cooper, was also a pretty dynamic character.

Spoilers ahead.

Okay, I really couldn’t write much more about the novel without spoiling things, so, of course, I had to jump to the spoilers. This was our book club pick for the month and my mom had finished this book before me, so as soon as I found out who the killer was, I called her. The funny thing, though, was that I texted her a few days before swearing that I got bad vibes from the bother….

Was it just me or did anyone else get horrible vibes from Cooper literally the second he was introduced? Just me? No? I never liked his character. I thought he was well built, but my danger radar went off as soon as Chloe began speaking to him. I also never was suspicious of Daniel even though the author clearly wanted me to be. I legit just thought that Chloe was having hallucinations of the jewelry because of mixing her pills and alcohol…. Also, the dad never came off as evil to me. Every detail the author gave about him just screamed protective father, not murdering rapist.

Overall, for fans of murder mystery novels, this is a pretty solid read. But I seriously want to know if anyone else guessed the ending, so definitely let me know!!
