Book Review: Adelaide by Genevieve Wheeler
With mental health themes and a gorgeous story about finding yourself amid the darkness in life, you can check out my Adelaide review below for my full thoughts on this amazing novel.
Book Information
Adelaide feels too much. She’s too loud, too goofy, too much in general. But she loves wholly and fiercely. She gives herself to other people and never says no. Adelaide, however, discovers that this often leads her to people who abuse her selflessness. People like Rory. And Rory is someone that Adelaide will never forget.
Review | Heidi Dischler
This book. I mean, this book. I wish I had read it before making the video for my favorite mental health novels because this book would be all over that list!! It deserves all the stars. All the light and laughter and goodness in the world. Just like Adelaide. Many of the reviews I’ve seen say something along the lines of “We all know a Rory” and while that might be true, I want my review to reflect that we all know an Adelaide, and our Adelaides need to be cherished and protected.
I like to think that I’m an Adelaide. Someone who cares too much (although I still firmly believe that caring too much isn’t a problem, other people just take advantage of it). Someone who loves with everything they have. Someone who will give you all that they have even if it destroys them. If I hadn’t found my husband so early in life, my 20s probably would have looked like Adelaide’s. I often tell myself to tone it down just like she did. But you know what? You should never have to tone down yourself just because other people can’t handle your light. The older I get, the more I realize this. I also understand more, too, on how to avoid the people who take advantage of my kindness. But I can also spot the people around me who are just as kind.
This book is not a love story, so don’t go into it thinking that you’ll get butterflies. This book is a tragedy in its purest form because it details how kind people who are different and feel more than everyone else often get abused and mistreated and mocked. Adelaide wasn’t afraid to dance by herself. Adelaide wasn’t scared to speak her mind. Adelaide was never terrified to love wholly and fully until after someone broke her. This book will take you on a rollercoaster of emotions. The highs and lows of life. But you know what? That’s what makes it so beautiful because even when life knocks you down, there are often many ways to pick yourself back up and become stronger than ever before.
Overall, I believe that we need to protect the people in our lives who are like Adelaide. It is those people who make the world better and brighter and change lives. This novel will bring you on a journey of self discovery and the heartbreaks and triumphs of life. Are you ready? Because, if you are, you’ll fall so deeply in love with this kind girl named Adelaide who feels so much and loves with her whole heart.
