Book Review: Book Lovers by Emily Henry

It’s finally here!! The Book Lovers review will go into all the things that make this book lovable and all the things that could’ve been better (even though there aren’t many thing!) Emily Henry’s Book Lovers was adorable in the best ways, romantically swoon worthy, and had the perfect amount of character development.

Book Information

Nora Stephens worries about two things in life: her little sister, Libby; and books. Her job as a literary agent lets her see the best in books, but also the worst. It also lets her see when something truly remarkable has been written. So when Libby asks her to leave New York for a few weeks to travel to Sunshine Falls, the town that appeared in one of Nora’s bestselling author’s books, Nora can’t refuse her little sister. When Nora finds out that her arch nemesis, Charlie, is also in Sunshine Falls, though, Nora begins to rethink her life choices.

As Libby seems to push Nora farther away, and Charlie becomes closer to Nora than anyone has ever been before, Nora must decide whether or not she’s willing to give up her life for her little sister. Or if the job she has now was ever really right for her at all.

Review | Heidi Dischler

Alrighty, so, Book Lovers is the third book I’ve read by Emily Henry (following Beach Read and People We Meet on Vacation). I have thoroughly enjoyed each of her books. Where would this one rank in terms of the three I’ve read? Probably number two. If you look by Goodreads standards, Book Lovers is number one. I don’t know, though, because I think Beach Read had a little more magic than this one.

Disclaimer: This is by no means saying that I disliked this book! I loved this book. I think the characters were amazing and had more backstory and personality than I have as a real human being. The thing that really holds me back on this novel is its slow burn.

Now, a lot of people enjoy slow burn romances and novels. For me, though, it just felt a little too slow. I loved the idea of a typical romance trope list that Libby so graciously gave Nora, but it never felt like there was any urgency in this novel. I think, more than anything, this is where I lost that fifth star.

The romance, though? Phenomenal as always. Nora and Charlie had such chemistry throughout the novel that I always loved each of their scenes together.

I don’t really want to get too much into spoilers except to say that the ending was quite predictable. For a romance novel, I never find that the endings are a shock because you always get these specific tropes (that the author ironically calls out throughout this book), so anticipating the ending really was inevitable.

Overall, though, this is the perfect summer read for people who want to relax, get a glass of wine, chill on the beach, and have no anxiety whatsoever. You will swoon plenty, and you will be taken away to Sunshine Falls easily within this novel. Definitely the perfect laid back escape!
