Book Review: Flock by Kate Stewart
A popular booktok novel, this book is credited as being devastating and seductive. Take a look at my full review for Flock by Kate Stewart below.
Book Information
Cecilia is spending the year with her estranged father so she can get her inheritance and get the heck out of there. Her attitude changes, though, when she meets Sean and Dominic. They attract her like no other guy has before and it may just be the most intense thing she’s ever experienced. But her heart is waging war over Sean and Dominic and who she wants to be with more. Not only that, but they’re keeping secrets. Dark ones. Ones that might threaten her very life.

This was… not what I expected. I was told that my heart would break. That I wouldn’t be the same after this book. That reading itself would be changed for me. I guess that’s the problem with Booktok, isn’t it? It set my expectations WAY too high. Was this book the absolute worst recommendation I’ve ever received? No. But did I enjoy it? Not really. Don’t get me wrong, some scenes were HOT. Most of the time, though, I was kind of just wondering what the hell was going on.
So, let’s start with what I want to talk about the most: the plot. Specifically, where the heck is the plot? Because I can’t find it. Cecilia is there for the year. Cool. She meets the bad boys. Alright, you’ve got me. They have a deep dark secret. Awesome. They keep having that deep dark secret… and keep having it… and keep having it. A tiny portion is revealed at the end of the novel, but the whole thing was more smut than plot. Not my cup of tea.
The characters? Well, I really like Cecilia. She’s headstrong and tries not to take too much crap from the guys, but, honestly, it was kind of sad watching how low she went for them. Everyone goes on and on about Dominic and Sean, but holy shit these two are toxic as heck. I don’t even like promoting this as a romance because it felt more like abuse. Dominic is possessive. Sean is just downright dumb. I just can’t with these two and they’re “dirty talk”. This just reminds me of Zayden and his masochistic worldview in Haunting Adeline.
Writing style-wise, I actually liked the book. It flowed well and was easy to read. The dialogue was fun and felt like something actual people would say (except when it got to some of the dirty talk because I really laughed out loud at some points). I kid you not, there was one point where Sean said, “It’s okay to want his dick, baby.” Like, what even 😂.
Overall, I don’t have much else to say besides that. The characters were toxic and abusive (sorry Cecilia, but you have horrible taste in men). The plot was not even there. The writing style was good and so was the smut. Is this something I’d recommend? Probably not. Not gonna lie, though, I already bought the second and third book, so I’ll probably still read the rest and hope for the best 🙈. 2/5 stars.
