Book Review: Happy Place by Emily Henry

One of the most anticipated books of the year, I’m so excited to review Happy Place by Emily Henry with you guys because this is legit my new favorite novel by her.

Book Information

Harriet only has one happy place and that’s the beach house that her friend Sabrina’s dad owns with all of her best friends there. She finally gets to take some time off from her residency and meet them at her happy place. The only problem is that her ex-fiancé is going as well, and none of their friends know that they broke up.

When Harriet sees Wyn, it’s like her heart is breaking all over again, but she has to pretend to still be with him for the sake of their last trip to her happy place and for Sabrina’s wedding. One more perfect friend vacation. If she can hold on for that long.

Here we go. I feel like I’ve been waiting years to read this book and I finally got to finish it! Happy Place is officially my new favorite book by Emily Henry (yes, better than Beach Read, People We Meet on Vacationand Book Lovers) for several reasons. The top two, though? The chemistry between Harriet and Wyn is off the charts, and the friend group dynamic that goes on the whole novel is superb.

Literally every single scene with Harriet and Wyn together was charged. Like sparks flying, electricity trying to stop your heart kind of charged. Their relationship was everything and I wholly enjoyed reading this novel because of it.

With the friend group? All of them were so amazing. I really related to the way that Harriet and Wyn were terrified that their breakup would ruin the friend group because my entire friend group is married as well, so it would be super awkward if someone got divorced.

As per usual, the writing style is beautiful and engaging and everything is described in such detail that it’s almost like watching a movie (of course, that’s if you have a vivid imagination like me). The plot is predictable as per usual for a romance novel, but I don’t hold it against the story because you read romance novels for a reason and that reason is not for them to end up not being together.

Spoilers ahead.

So, I obviously should’ve guessed that Sabrina knew about Wyn and Harriet being broken up, but I was just so into the story that it slipped by me all the hints that were dropped that pointed to them knowing. The other things I loved about this book was the bedroom scene where Wyn puts Harriet into her favorite shirt of his after she puked on her own shirt and he told her that he brought it just for her. Literally melted my heart.  I also loved the token airport scene (because what’s a romance novel without one? haha).

The one thing that really took me by surprise, though, was Harriet leaving her residency to move to Montana to be with Wyn. I mean, like I said earlier, this had to happen in a romance novel, but I guess I was expecting Wyn to move to meet her. Just think of all that time she spent in a field that she hates…. Blows my mind.

Overall, this is Emily Henry’s best work in my opinion. You get romance and friendships and chemistry that’ll take your breath away. I will anxiously be waiting for her next novel even though I’m pretty positive nothing will be able to top this one.
