This short memoir was so heartbreaking to read. I could feel Amy Lin’s grief through the pages and could imagine my own if I had to go through what she did. It is so beautifully and lyrically written that I often found myself submerged in grief that wasn’t mine. 

Kurtis was written in such a way that I really wish I could have known him. The love Amy felt for him was palpable and it made everything hurt that much more as she battled her grief. 

I don’t have many negative things to say about this novel except that it was very sporadic and short. I think I would have benefitted more from a less jumpy approach to storytelling than this one. One second you’re in the present, the next you’re months in the past, and then the next you’re a month after the months in the past. It was a little confusing, but since the only timeline you really needed was before Kurtis and after Kurtis, it wasn’t so disorienting that I had to stop reading. I also think it could have been a little longer. I would love to know how Amy Lin feels now that her memoir is out. 

Overall, this memoir was so beautifully written. If you’ve ever experienced loss of this magnitude, you will definitely connect with Amy Lin’s thoughts and sentiments as she struggled to find her way out of her grief. 4.5 out of 5 stars for breaking my heart into pieces.
