Book Review: In the Likely Event by Rebecca Yarros
A romance that gripped me for the entire novel, check out my full review of In the Likely Event by Rebecca Yarros below!
Book Information
After meeting on a plane and surviving a plane crash together, Izzy and Nate form an unbreakable bond. But everything keeps pushing them apart. Throughout the years, the disasters, and the heartbreak, Izzy and Nate keep meeting each other even if it makes no sense that they’d be in the same place at the same time. But when Izzy travels to Afghanistan to save her sister and Nate is tasked with being her body guard, they can’t ignore it any longer. But everyone might not make it out alive this time.

There was a lot that I liked about this book. Like A LOT. I have read mixed reviews for it before, but since I liked The Things We Leave Unfinished and The Last Letter by Rebecca Yarros so much, I decided that I am just gonna binge all of her books starting with this one.
In the Likely Event basically starts with a plane crash that brings two people together and they begin to fall in love after that. It’s told in two alternating timelines. One is the present as they’re trying to rescue Izzy’s sister from Afghanistan. The second timeline is everything leading up to that moment and all the history that Izzy and Nate have together. I think it was done well enough that I never hated any specific timeline, so that never caused an issue for me. The plot also made enough sense that I wasn’t left questioning anything (except every decision that Nate made, but I’ll get into that later).
For my main characters, their chemistry was UNSTOPPABLE. I loved everything about Nate and Izzy as a couple. Izzy was such a fun female main character and Nate was… Nate. He honestly got on my nerves so much throughout the whole entire book that I’m lucky to have even enjoyed the romance between Izzy and Nate. All of his decisions were dumb and all he ever did was push Izzy away instead of trying to make it work. I wanted to throttle him. Besides that aggravating aspect of this novel, the romance was top tier. The steamy scenes? Well, let’s just say they’re some of the best I’ve ever read. With the tension between the two main characters, the chemistry, and just the wonderful writing, those spicy scenes definitely had some heat.
Spoilers ahead.
I do want to mention that one aspect of the plot seemed a little unnecessary and almost there for shock value. I’m giving you a big SPOILER WARNING here just so I can write it super quickly. Torres being dead a majority of the time? I don’t see how it added much to the plot except solidifying the fact that Nate was certifiable. I already knew that because of the way he pushed Izzy away and was honestly a dirtbag sometimes, but still. I didn’t see the point in revealing that or even having that as part of the book. Sure, it gave Nate trauma, but war did that by itself. Torres being dead wasn’t needed in my opinion.
Overall, I love Rebecca Yarros’ writing style and her superb way of making a romance story come to life. I’m excited to start another book from her, but also really excited that this one is being adapted!! The chemistry was amazing as was the story and characters, so I couldn’t be more stoked to see it on the big screen.
