Book Review: It Ends with Us by Colleen Hoover

One of Colleen Hoover’s most popular novels, my It Ends with Us review is from the perspective of my second time reading it. Let me tell you, it was just as good (if not better) than the first time I read it, and I firmly believe that everyone who loves CoHo should read this book. Even if you don’t like her. Read it

Book Information

Lily Bloom has always wanted to open a flower shop. Romance has never been on the forefront of her mind. But when she meets Ryle Kincaid, everything changes. He’s charming, charismatic, and everything she could ever want in a man. He’s the only person who has ever made her feel this way since Atlas changed her life nearly a decade ago. But Atlas is gone and she hasn’t seen him since she was younger. So, as she gets closer to Ryle and closer to the life she’s always wanted, everything feels perfect. Until Atlas reappears in her life, Ryle’s secrets come to light, and until she wonders exactly how different she actually is from her own parents.

Oh. My. Gosh. This is the second time that I’ve read this book (I felt like I needed to read it again before reading It Starts With Us because it’s been so many years since I’ve read It Ends With Us). Somehow, I’m still speechless. I firmly believe this is one of Colleen Hoover’s most brilliant books, and after listening to the Author’s Note (I highly recommend doing that), I can see why. She put so much emotion into this book, so much heart. Everything hurt reading this.

In regards to her characters, each one had so much depth. Even the villain was easy to sympathize with (don’t shoot me, I’m just telling the truth). Ryle, Atlas, and Lily were all so complex that I felt so many different emotions for each of them. I wanted everyone to get a happily ever after and it hurt so much. Being an adult means making hard choices and boy were there plenty of those in this book.

There are so many things to love about this book, but if you are not good with strong emotions and things that will make you (very) sad, I would recommend staying away from this book. Many of Colleen Hoover’s books include difficult subject matter and It Ends With Us is no different. This book and Reminders of Him are my all time favorites from her. The raw depth and emotions in them just make the books so very worth reading.

Overall if there is anything that I can tell you to get you to read this book without spoiling it, it is the fact that this book will teach you something. It will teach you how to make difficult choices in certain situations. You’ll learn that sometimes, the choices you make may not always feel right or good even if they are. It will teach you that what has to be done might be the thing that hurts you the most. This is beautifully written, raw in emotions, and so powerful in its characters and plot. You will not be disappointed with this novel. And definitely don’t forget to check out the sequel, It Starts with Us!

“But no matter how different the substance of a love might be at different ages in a person's life, I know that love still has to weigh the same. You feel that weight on your shoulders and in your stomach and on your heart no matter how old you are.”
