Book Review: Layla by Colleen Hoover
With my review for Layla by Colleen Hoover, I have found that this is probably my least favorite of her books. Does this mean that it’s a terrible book? Absolutely not. Is she still one of my favorite authors ever? 100%.
Book Information
Leeds never thought he’d find the perfect girl. That is until he met Layla. Layla is free-spirited, goofy, uncoordinated, and most of all, everything that Leeds wants. As they fall in love with each other, a tragic event leaves Layla traumatized and nothing like the way she was before. Leeds tries to help her heal by bringing her back to where their love began, but something bigger is happening… something that neither of them could have predicted.

I really really don’t know what to say about this book. Colleen Hoover is one of my top ten—hell, top five—favorite authors and I have always loved her writing. However, I think the premise of this book just kind of threw me off. Don’t get me wrong, it has nothing to do with the characters or the writing or plot development. More just along the lines of the premise. It was hard to swallow in my opinion. It did remind me a lot of the tone and ambiance of Verity, and I absolutely loved Verity, but I just couldn’t get my head around the idea that Colleen Hoover went with for this novel.
Spoilers ahead.
So, let me get this out of the way now. Layla was extremely weird in the context of emotions. I didn’t know whether or not to feel sorry for Layla/Willow/Leeds/Sable, or just to hate them all. There were super humorous and lighthearted scenes in the book (like the aspirin that Leeds thought was drugs…), but the book overall was very heavy.
The fact that Leeds willingly let Willow take over Layla’s body whenever he needed Willow seriously disturbed me. After everything was said and done, I’m surprised Layla even wanted to stay with him because, to me at least, HE’S A TERRIBLE PERSON. Like, dude, I get that Layla is the love of you life and all, but you legit killed Sable twice to “save” Layla. I didn’t even remotely like him as a person by the end of the book. I’m not sure I even liked Layla because she went along with it. So, basically the overall lack of morality by the main characters seriously through me off and made the ending not even matter that much to me. Also, I was literally sitting there waiting for some bomb to drop like it did in Verity and I almost felt betrayed by the happy ending… ironically enough.
If you’re the type of person who likes paranormal ghost stories (literally think Ghost with Patrick Swayze), then this book is for you. Be warned, though, it made me feel very uncomfortable with the lines they had to cross to get to their happily ever after. So, overall, not my favorite Colleen Hoover book, but by no means is it bad. Just not for me.
