Book Review: Losing Hope by Colleen Hoover

Probably my least favorite from the series, in my Losing Hope review, I’ll tell you exactly why it didn’t measure up. From the perspective of Dean Holder, Losing Hope is in many ways the same as Hopelessbut maybe a little less exciting.

Book Information

Dean hasn’t been the same ever since Hope was taken. Neither has his sister, Les. He’s even gone as far as to change what people call him to Holder so that he doesn’t have to remember the way Hope used to say his name. When a mysterious girl shows up into his life, though, he is sure that he’s found Hope. Until he finds out that her name is Sky. As he gets closer to her, though, he begins to question everything he’s known as he and Sky finally find out the truth about what happened.

So, to start out, I didn’t particularly enjoy this book. It was nice seeing a few new things about the story from Holder’s perspective, but most of it was just a retelling. I’m not one to pick up a book and read it just because it’s from another character’s perspective, so I found this book to be quite underwhelming. I finished it, though! Because the series would’ve felt incomplete had I not read this book.

The really good things about this book? The new scenes with Les. The new scenes with just Holder when he isn’t with Sky. Basically, anything that wasn’t in Hopeless. Don’t hate me, I just get bored really easily. However, I did really enjoy all of the romance as per usual because CoHo is amazing at writing love scenes packed full of emotion.

The writing and the plot and everything else is still solid, it’s just that knowing what comes next makes me lose a lot of interest in the story. So, if I had to give you a ranking of this book compared to the whole Hopeless series? My least favorite for sure. Just because I’m the hopeless one and get bored so freaking easy.

Overall, if you’re a die hard Colleen Hoover fan, definitely read this book. If you like books told from the perspective of a different character (but basically the same plot), you’ll enjoy this as well. I just don’t like that kind of thing so it fell flat for me. Solid three out of five stars. Very mediocre.
