Book Review: Maybe Not by Colleen Hoover
So, in my tier ranking of Colleen Hoover books, I swore that I never read novellas or those tiny side-character stories that authors write after their book become successful. Today, I’m writing a book review for Maybe Not, a short novella about Warren and Bridgette. Did I enjoy it? Yes. Will I start reading more novellas? Maybe. Maybe not 😉
Book Information
Warren has always been the guy to jump at the chance at being with a hot girl, but when Bridgette moves in and is completely unlike any girl he’s ever met, he’s automatically hooked. Bridgette is mean, cold, and completely guarded. It makes Warren want her even more. So as they spend more time together, Warren wonders if he’ll be able to get her to open up, or if she’ll stay guarded forever, never letting him get close.

The first thing I want to say about this experience is that man it was nice to just finish an audiobook in three hours. I started it at work and finished before it was even lunchtime. Now, if you haven’t read Maybe Someday (you can go check out my review for a rundown), you’d probably be a little confused by this book. I don’t think it works well as a standalone just because of the size of it. Without knowing the development of Warren and Bridgette in Maybe Someday, I probably would’ve been a little confused. Not bad. Just a tiny bit.
So, the second thing I want to say is—my freaking goodness—Warren is still a douche. Like, jeez, Bridgette was clearly uncomfortable a lot of times in this book, but Warren kept going thinking that he knew best (as a man typically does…. Haha). It made me very uncomfortable. He’s still probably my least favorite character from this story. Bridgette used to be pretty low on the totem pole, but she moved up a bit after getting to know a little about her in this novel.
Also, I’m warning you, if you listen to this audiobook at work or in public or basically anywhere with people, most of the book takes place in the bedroom. If you know what I mean. So don’t say I didn’t warn you when you can’t stop blushing at work.
Spoilers ahead.
The one thing that I do want to say in the spoilers is that I’m highly disappointed with Warren’s actions. I mentioned above that he didn’t take no for an answer, and it made me uncomfortable. Bridgette, of course, always stood up for herself, but sometimes I just wanted to punch Warren. Especially when you learn that Bridgette’s uncle assaulted her as a child. Or, as she put it, loved her in all the wrong ways. It made Warren’s actions even more despicable.
Overall, Colleen Hoover sure knows how to make her characters pop. Whether you like them or dislike them, she knows exactly how to develop a character and make you fall in love or make you hate them. Her writing style is, as always, so fluid and easy to read. It’s part of the reason why I love her books so much, and I know I’ll be finding books that I haven’t read by her to binge very soon.
