Book Review: The Boyfriend by Freida McFadden
Twisted and an honestly unexpected ending, Freida McFadden’s The Boyfriend was a quick mystery that had me questioning my detective skills by the end. Check out my full review of The Boyfriend below!
Book Information
Sydney knows that her biological clock is ticking. It’s not like she isn’t trying to find the perfect boyfriend (and her mother reminding her of it every second of the day doesn’t help), but it’s just so hard to find the right guy. When her friend gets murdered, though, and Sydney seems to find the right man right when she needs him, things start taking a turn for the worst.

This book was honestly kind of draining. It wasn’t super thrilling and it wasn’t something that I wanted to stay up reading. If I’m being honest, I probably would have given it a solid two stars had it not been the fact that the ending took me completely by surprise. So, I’ll get into the characters and plot below and tell you everything that I thought about The Boyfriend.
I think one of the things that really dragged this book down in terms of plot was the dual timelines. I think that knowing a little bit about the background of our main subject was intriguing, but it made the book so predictable in terms of who you were eventually going to be pointing fingers towards. Not only that, but I didn’t feel like the stakes were high because I didn’t connect with the characters the way that I wanted to.
So, with the characters, Sydney was okay. I mean she was your basic female main character who seemed to just go with the flow even when all things point to something that obviously isn’t right with the relationships in her life. Like, girl, you can’t just be like, “Well, that’s too much of coincidence to even be remotely likely.” That, my friend, is how you get yourself killed. She wasn’t unlikeable, she was just so… bland, I guess? Bonnie was the only one who had potential, but yeah…
The ending, though? I guessed it to an extent. There were some things I was like, “Wow, this is a pretty cool way to spin things.” But mainly, I saw it coming.
Overall, I don’t have too much to say about the book. The ending was completely unexpected, which was nice. The characters were meh and so was the plot. I really didn’t like the dual timelines, but that’s typically one of my personal preferences (I’m very linear leaning in terms of storytelling). 2.5 out of 5 stars rounded up to three for the social platforms. If you’re looking for a mystery that will have you gripping the edge of your seat, I recommend If Something Happens to Me by Alex Finlay or A Long Stretch of Bad Days by Mindy McGinnis.
