Book Review: The Newcomer by Mary Kay Andrews

In my search of finding the perfect beach read, I’ve stumbled upon Mary Kay Andrews’ The Newcomer. My The Newcomer book review will go over what makes it a wonderful addition to any chill, romantic, summer reads that you have on your list!

Book Information

Letty Carnahan is on the run. She’s taken her niece, Maya, with her, prompting an amber alert and Letty to go into panic mode. But she’s running for a good reason. Her sister, Tanya, had just been murdered and Letty knows who did it: Evan, Tanya’s ex-boyfriend and Maya’s father.

Letty ends up at the Murmuring Surf where she gets a job, meets many new, quirky people, and ultimately finds a sense of peace that she’s never had. But as these people get closer to her, her secret gets closer to the surface as well. Can she convince everyone that Evan murdered her sister? Will she be able to escape her sister’s dark past?

Review | Heidi Dischler

I’m going to start out by saying that I really enjoyed this book. It definitely isn’t a five star read for me, but there are very specific reasons for that that’ll be listed below. Over all, though? A solid four stars, for sure, and, a bonus, I’ve found a new beach read author.

So, the main reason that this book is not five stars for me is that it was too laid back. Considering the story and everything that is going on in it, you’d think that this story would have a little more urgency. Nothing in this story was urgent, and that was a good thing… and a bad thing. Good because it makes this book perfect for a relaxing day on the beach. Bad because if you want something to stimulate your brain, make your heart race, and make the pages flip so quickly you feel a breeze, this isn’t really that book. However, it has nothing to do with plot or characters.

With the plot and the characters, everything was laid out amazingly. I enjoyed each character, they each felt unique, and I liked spending time with each of them. The plot progressed (even if it was slowly and without urgency) at a very measured pace. This book doesn’t lack anything in development, it just doesn’t have that UMPH that you want in a book.

Spoilers ahead.

The only thing I wanna mention in the story (it bugged me the whole time I was reading this novel) is the fact that I had the strangest sense that Letty was an unreliable narrator. Did anyone else think that?? I spent a good bit of this book waiting for it to turn around and Letty be the one who murdered Tanya. But maybe that’s just because I watch too much SVU and read too many crime novels….

Overall, like I mentioned above, this is the perfect book for a relaxing day on the beach. It’s not too stimulating that you find yourself exhausted when you’re trying to chill out and the development with both the characters and the plot is superb. I’ve definitely found an author that I will return to for another beach read novel.
