Book Review: This Girl by Colleen Hoover

The last book in the Slammed series, This Girl wasn’t anything new or particularly interesting. While I really enjoyed Slammed and I definitely liked Point of Retreat more than This Girl, I’m highly disappointed with how this novel turned out. Read below to see my review for This Girl.

Book Information

It has finally happened. Lake and Will are married and now on their honeymoon. This Girl follows the two as they recall the beginning of their relationship from Will’s point of view.

Alternating between scenes during the honeymoon and scenes from Slammed from Will’s point of view, This Girl will give readers a glimpse of what their happily ever after looks like.

Alright, so here we are. My This Girl review will probably disappoint CoHo fans everywhere who are looking for more of her novels to consume (I definitely mean consume because this is a rarity for me to rate one so low).  If you’ve checked out my tier ranking of Colleen Hoover novelsThis Girl would fall right next to Layla. Honestly, though, I feel like I need another tier in between Layla and All Your Perfects (which is where Point of Retreat would be) because This Girl was better than Layla but not as good as Point of Retreat

So, what to say about this book? Will said “this girl” way too much. It was definitely deliberate by the author, but it made it less effective in my opinion rather than driving the point home. I also really hate retellings from the “other main character” and their point of view. It drove me nuts to just listen to the exact same scenes but from Will’s point of view. At least in Losing Hope, you got a lot of new scenes that you never read before, but in This Girl, it was almost exactly the same. If it wasn’t for the honeymoon scenes, I probably would’ve stopped reading.

Overall, Colleen Hoover’s writing is obviously phenomenal. You can see so much growth if you look at this novel vs. her newer ones. She’s really gotten confident and comfortable in her book-writing prowess. I just really didn’t like this book. I think the Slammed series could’ve stopped at book one. We really didn’t need the extra two in my opinion.
