Book Review: Unravel Me by Tahereh Mafi

The second book in the Shatter Me series, Unravel Me gives a lot more than the first novel did and I’m honestly so happy I read the novella Destroy Me before this book. Check out my full review for Unravel Me below!

Book Information

Juliette is finally safe within the rebellion, but things aren’t as great as she thought they would be. She still can’t control her powers. Warner is still out looking for her. Adam is hiding things from her. A war is coming. With so much happening, Juliette is sure to be tested as she reaches her limits. But maybe that’s exactly what she needs.

Review | Heidi Dischler

So I do think this novel was a lot better than Shatter Me for a few reasons. I’m going to go into detail below, but a lot of it had to do with character development, plot, and overall development in the entire world that Tahereh Mafi built.

Easily the best thing to talk about with this novel (and the whole series to be honest) is the writing style. Tahereh Mafi’s writing is beautiful and so full of emotion and energy. Even though I didn’t like Shatter Me as much as I’d hoped, I really still loved the beautiful writing.

With the characters, there was SO much development in all of my favorites (not Adam… he’s the worst!!! Sorry to all of the ones rooting for Adam haha). Juliette didn’t seem so whiney and Kenji was the best for calling her out a few times during the novel. You got to see more of Warner in this novel, too, and he’s definitely still my number one. Castle isn’t my favorite, but hey, you can’t win them all. What I liked most about the characters in this book is that they had more depth. There was more when it came to motivations and drive. There seemed to be an actual direction for them finally. The only one who was still one dimensional was Adam.

Plot-wise, you’re following Juliette as she’s trying to learn more about her powers. There’s a growing tension as Warner’s men get closer and closer to finding their hideout, and the buildup was great. Now, I did feel like the ending was rushed a little and felt very… underwhelming. I just finished Fracture Me, and it gives you a little more in terms of details, but not much. Basically I’m just going to have to jump into the next novel to figure out what happened.

Overall, I enjoyed this one a lot more than Shatter Me. The characters were developed a lot more, the world was built out into something that almost felt real, and there was a building tension with the plot in knowing where it was headed. 4/5 stars!
