Book Review: We Are the Brennans by Tracey Lange

Even though I usually don’t like family-centered drama books, but I’m so excited to write the We Are the Brennans book review following the Brennan family and their imperfect dysfunction. Full of love, communication, and the ties of family that will never break, We Are the Brennans is sure to warm your heart and make you long for the family you have.

Book Information

Sunday Brennan lives in LA, letting the family and fiancé she left behind think that she’s living a life of luxury. In reality, though, she’s miserable and so homesick that she ends up getting drunk and totaling her car. When her brother Denny comes to her aid, he convinces her to go home to the family she never wanted to leave. Told in multiple point of views from different siblings in Sunday’s family as well as her dad, Sunday herself, and her fiancé, We Are the Brennans showcases the bond between those we call family, and the pitfalls of harboring secrets.

So, this is not a five star book for me. It was, however, a four star book. I think the fact that it was family-centered alone made it into a four star, but it was still so good.

The Brennans remind me so much of my own family, which is why I think I enjoyed this book so much. While my mom is not as bad as the mother in this book, and my family’s communications skills are WAY better than any of the Brennans (even though our skills still suck), the Brennans warmed my heart in more ways than one. For starters, they always had each others backs, and they never refused to forgive one another.

The plot, while spotty in places, was still easy to follow and enjoyable as a whole. However, the secret holding Sunday back from the family that she can’t live without just didn’t seem as bad as I thought it would be. I know that sounds horrible for those of you who’ve read the book, but I’ve been through something similar and I can’t imagine going across the country because of it.

Spoilers ahead.

The only reason I can kind of justify why Sunday did what she did was because of her mother. I can’t imagine being pushed away after telling my mom something like that and it broke my heart for Sunday. But, man, did I feel bad for Vivian (even if she was a tad bit mean and horrible).

Overall, to be completely honest, this book was a whole lot of miscommunication and things that could’ve been easy fixed had someone just talked to another person. I still loved it anyway because of the wonderful characters and the amazing bonds that they shared.

“Family didn't mean hiding the hard stuff from each other, it meant facing it together and it meant forgiving each other.”
