Book Review: We’ll Always Have Summer by Jenny Han

Now that I’ve had time to process this whirlwind of a book, I can finally write the review for We’ll Always Have Summer by Jenny Han, the last book in The Summer I Turned Pretty trilogy. Let me tell you, when I said this book was a whirlwind, I was not lying. This book had me on a rollercoaster of emotions and screaming at characters who were obviously making some very poor decisions. Read on below for my full review😊

Book Information

Belly is in college now, she’s dating Jeremiah, and it completely happy in her life. Or content. She’s not so sure. But when Jeremiah asks Belly to marry him—and she says yes—Belly has to confront her feelings for Conrad that never truly went away. Conrad, though, has to decide whether or not he can let his brother marry the love of his life or if he’ll let her go forever.

I’m gonna be honest, I don’t know how much I can write about this book without it being a spoiler. Goodreads describes Jeremiah’s mistake in the beginning of the book as “the worst mistake a boy can make,” and you can kind of guess what that was. It absolutely broke my heart. I hate when characters do that, but I’ll have to talk more about it in the spoilers to not reveal too much of the story. The second one was better than the first, I think, and you can read my review for It’s Not Summer Without You here. I’m not sure how I would rank the last book compared to the second, though, since both were very immature in many ways.

Basically, this whole book is about Belly deciding who she wants to be with: Conrad or Jeremiah. I honestly hate love triangles between brothers because it screws up so much within their family that it doesn’t seem worth it in my opinion. Whatever though, to each their own, I guess. The amount of reckless decision-making and blatant disregard for their parents’ wishes really blows my mind in this book. Belly and Jeremiah basically ignore everything their parents are saying (even though their parents are completely correct) and go on with their lives the way they want to live them. Huge mistake in my opinion. If you hate books where characters are just making dumb decisions left and right, you probably won’t enjoy this book. I enjoyed it, but only because of the ending.

Spoilers ahead.

Alright, let’s get into these spoilers. First of all, WHY DID JEREMIAH HAVE TO CHEAT ON BELLY?!? Literally this is the one thing in a book that will break my heart and make me completely hate a character. Cheating is inexcusable. My husband and I talk about this all the time. We both agree that it feels like something you can’t come back from. You lose so much trust in that person and things would never go back to the way they were before. I just…. I couldn’t. Not to mention, Belly literally forgave him like TWO DAYS LATER! Ridiculous and childish and immature. Dear lord, I mean, she agreed to marry him, and he basically proposed as a way to get her to forgive him. I couldn’t deal with it. Literally the dumbest decisions I’ve ever seen a character make. Also, I absolutely loathe when the character who cheated says they can’t love anyone and that sleeping with someone else didn’t mean anything. Like, excuse me? That is one of the most intimate things you can do with a person and you’re saying it didn’t mean anything? I don’t know how y’all feel about that, but to me, it always means something. Maybe not love, but to connect with a person on that level obviously means something. Okay, rant over.

Overall, I am disappointed and not at the same time by this book. I know that doesn’t make sense, but you’ll have to read it to understand. I enjoyed spending time with the characters as always, but man, the decision-making was horrible for them the whole entire way through. The ending saved the book. That’s all I have to say.
