Movie Review: Perfect Addiction (2023)

I did not expect to like this as much as I did. I loved the characters, I loved the plot, and I loved the ending. So, yeah, let me just tell you all about my movie review for Perfect Addiction below!

Movie Blurb

Sienna (Kiana Madeira) trains boxers for a living, working her way through college. When she trains Jax (Matthew Noszka), he becomes one of the best fighters around. Not to mention, he steals her heart. That is, until she finds him sleeping with her little sister.

Now, Sienna must find someone to defeat Jax in the ring, but when she meets Kayden (Ross Butler), she knows everything is about to change. He may be Jax’s arch nemesis, but he’s quickly becoming Sienna’s everything. Even if she’s training him to beat the one person she thought she’d love forever.

This movie kind of took me by surprise.

It was late, but I stayed up anyway (and if you have a toddler, you know this is a bad idea). I went into this movie thinking, yeah, this’ll be a B-rated movie that isn’t that great. I’ll just turn my brain off and watch it. The thing is, though, I really enjoyed this movie. It wasn’t until after I finished watching it that I realized it was actually a Wattpad story that turned into a book.

On a side note, I love how we can just find writers whose stories everyone just gravitates towards even if the publishing industry doesn’t think they’ll work.

So, onto my thoughts. I’ll start with the characters. Sienna was my absolute favorite kind of heroine. Kind but also not afraid to take a punch. Nice but also not a pushover. Definitely my kind of leading lady. The actress, Kiana Madeira, was phenomenal and did such a wonderful job capturing Sienna as a person. Her sister, though? A total B-word. I don’t even remember her name if I’m being honest and her character was so one-dimensional that she barely even needs recognition in this review. Now, Ross Butler was to die for. His character, Kayden, was tortured and dark, but still redeemable (a total Damon Salvatore if you know what I’m talking about 😉). Every scene with him just made my heart melt and he acts so well. This movie was marketed as a love-triangle, but let me tell you, Ross Butler makes his character so desirable and kind and basically swoon worthy that you don’t even care about bad boy Jax. I just wanted him to get sucker punched by Kayden and that be the end of it.

Now that you know a little more about the characters, let’s talk about the plot. So you basically follow Sienna after her traumatic discovery that her sister and her boyfriend, Jax (boxing star who SHE trained to win) are sleeping together. She literally caught them in the act. I would’ve been traumatized forever. She gets on this revenge bender and starts training Kayden to beat Jax, but eventually falls for Kayden. Easy enough and straightforward enough for a romance movie. Just the kind of predictable I needed, if I’m being honest. If you’re looking for something a little more nuanced, this will not be it, my friend.

My thoughts overall? Ross Butler and Kiana Madeira had chemistry that was off the charts. It was fun to watch and definitely what I need in a romance movie. I highly enjoyed it and will talk about some specific things that I enjoyed in the spoilers below.

Spoilers ahead.

Just a few quick things that made this romance stick out:

  • The paint scene between Sienna and Kayden? AHHH I loved every second of it.
  • Kayden leaving Sienna so she won’t be in his shadow at the end of the movie? Wow, a man with a heart of gold. If he didn’t already have me at that point in the movie, I would’ve been sold forever at this point. Of course they get back together shortly after, but that’s not the point.
  • Whoever wrote this book is literally my bestie because Sienna forgiving Jax??? This is what I always talk about and rant about. We need more forgiveness in the world. Not necessarily for the people who commit evil, but for ourselves. Because forgiving a person sets YOU free, not them. Being the bigger person and taking the high road? Yeah, that shit never gets old. I loved Sienna wholeheartedly at this moment and wanted to stand up and applaud her. Humanity is rooted in kindness. It is not violence that changes people’s minds, it’s the small gestures of kindness. Those will change the world.

So, those are my thoughts and spoilers for Perfect Addiction. It was the best movie I’ve ever seen, but it really took me out a reality for its runtime and that’s all I can ever ask of a movie. 4.5/5 stars (AKA, go watch this movie if you like romances).
