A struggling photographer named Pia (Simone Ashley) learns that within five dates, she’ll find her soulmate. With her eager family finding dates for her, her studio struggling, her sister’s wedding, and the reappearance of her first love, Charlie (Hero Fiennes Tiffin), things are about to get messy.

Alright, this was definitely not my favorite watch. Honestly, I loved the cast of actors and actresses that were picked for this movie. Hero Fiennes Tiffin is amazing and I absolutely loved him in After (2019). Simone Ashley was also great in Bridgerton (2020-) even if her season was my least favorite (also my least favorite book in the series, to be fair). This movie, though? It honestly felt like a hot mess.
So, where to start? I think one of the most off-putting things was the way our MC, Pia (Simone Ashley) is written. She’s supposed to be this strong entrepreneur who wants her studio to do well, but honestly comes off as some privileged girl who doesn’t appreciate what she has (or work towards making it work for that matter). Her pride at not wanting to do passport photos because it’s supposed to be a studio where portraits are taken honestly just feels wrong (especially when your best friend WHO YOU EMPLOY hasn’t been paid for two months…). I truly hated Pia’s character so much and actually like her sister, Sonal (Anoushka Chadha) SO much better. I really just don’t think I can get past how poorly written Pia’s character is. There’s only so much that acting can do for a character that is THAT dislikable.
Now, my other problem with this movie is the gosh darned plot. This is supposed to be a rom-com. I felt neither the rom or the com hardly at all in this movie. We hardly ever see Charlie (Hero Fiennes Tiffin), and when we do see him, he’s making sad puppy eyes in a corner as Pia is off doing God knows what. Where are the actionable things? The only scene that felt even remotely good or full of chemistry was when Charlie went to Pia’s studio. There are also several other things in the plot that really bothered me, but I’ll talk about those in the spoilers.
Spoilers Ahead.
Y’all, this movie really has me in a tizzy because I disliked it that much. I really do believe there will be people out there who enjoy this, but it just wasn’t for me. Below, I’ll sum up some of my least favorite plot points (and maybe one of my favorites) with some bullet points.
- I mentioned this above, but seriously, how do you employ your best friend, Jay (Luke Fetherston), and not pay him for two months? That’s just plain unrealistic. I’m sorry. I couldn’t buy into that at all. Not only does that make Pia a terrible friend, but how the hell does Jay live? Did I just miss the plot point where he’s a billionaire who doesn’t need to work? Maybe I did, but that messed up the whole friendship for me.
- Alright, the dates? Not only were they wildly unbelievable, but these male characters were BIMBOS. I hate seeing men, women, or people depicted like that because it just seems so harsh, unrealistic, and stereotyping people into these tiny boxes. Dumb dumb dumb. Of course she went for Charlie because he was the only man who could form a complete sentence without sounding like a lunatic (or saying that he was in love with her mother like Akshay (Nikesh Patel).
- Speaking of Akshay, that epipen debacle on his date with Pia made me CRINGE SO HARD. As someone with allergies who carries around an epipen, seeing how incompetent Pia was made me angry beyond believe. Like girl, don’t hesitate when you’re literally wasting time to save his life!!!! Not only that, but ACTUALLY STABBING HIM with epinephrine after he said he loved her mother??? That’s beyond reckless and I’d consider it assault. Absolutely not funny and did not hit any mark whatsoever for me.
- Last bad thing, I swear, is when Pia gets famous and her studio finally takes off. It felt so easy and honestly just gave me more “selfish privilege” vibes from her. Not only did it feel unauthentic and awkward the way the two young girls are holding up the phone to record, but Pia holding up a picture of a man’s body being “funny enough” to film live seems so unbelievable to me. Maybe that’s just me though. So the whole “the studio is saved because you accidentally got live-streamed and said some pretty words” felt very… flat to me.
- My only favorite scene in this whole movie (besides Charlie going into Pia’s studio the first time), is when Sonal tells Pia off. Man that felt good because Pia was just being plain annoying. I’m done ranting about her character, I swear.
So, overall, I did not like this movie one bit. Not gonna even try to rate it. My main thing is not with the actors but the freaking writing. It was horrible. The characters weren’t developed. There was no romance in my opinion. The plot was blah. I just don’t understand because I know a ton of people who write really well and someone we’re getting movies like this. Please find better ideas and writers. Please.
