So, I am a sucker for romance movies. Whether it’s for meet-cutes, destined to be together, or summer romances, I want them all. Here is a list of my favorite romance movies to watch every time I’m feeling like I need a pick-me-up!
Dirty Dancing (1987)
Patrick Swayze was (and probably still is) one of my biggest movie crushes. Once I watched Dirty Dancing, I literally binged every movie he was in. None of them compare to this summer romance with scenes that will literally light your blood on fire. Nobody puts baby in a corner!!!
This is probably one of the least known (and cheesiest) of all the romance movies on my list. Hilary Duff’s character is off to a prestigious summer music program after the death of her character’s brother. This leads to some pretty dramatic moments with a cute romance in between. Can I pinpoint why I love to binge this B movie? No, but I still love it 🙂
Ughhh Heath Ledger is sooo swoon worthy in this movie (and he’s also my other movie crush). This whole Taming of the Shrew remake is probably one of my favorite movies of all time and it’s because of the chemistry between Heath Ledger and Julia Stiles. High school angst? Check. Pretending to date but then falling in love? Double check. I can’t say enough good things about this movie and if you haven’t seen it, then honestly, you must not watch romance movies.
Another Shakespearean knockoff (this decade had a ton!!), She’s the Man is absolutely hilarious and honestly so sweet. Violet (Amanda Bynes) only wants to play soccer. So when her girls’ soccer team gets disbanded, she goes in her twin bother’s place to a boarding school with an awesome soccer team. The only problem is that she has to pretend to be a guy. Andddd she’s falling in love with her roommate. It’s the recipe for a perfect romance movie.
I can’t tell you how many times I’ve watched this movie. Specifically, how many times I’ve watched the scene where Hilary Duff’s character disses Chad Michael Murray’s character. Like, you can’t get better than that!! The emotions. The secret romance. The Cinderella-style story. I love everything about this and you can’t change my mind (even if it’s cheesy).
Well. I didn’t actually cry for this movie, but this one is sure to bring up all the emotions! Carter (Shane West) is a bad boy who falls in love with Jamie (Mandy Moore). But when Jamie’s secret threatens their whole relationship, Carter is left trying to find what true love really means. And boy, does he find it. This is probably the sad movie that I sit on my couch with a pint of ice cream to watch.
I watched this one probably only a few years ago. Someone was so surprised that I hadn’t watched Pretty Woman that they literally shoved the DVD in my hands and said, “Let’s watch it now.” Ever since then, it has been on my rotation of romance movies to watch over and over again. Julia Roberts is soooo charismatic in this movie, and while a lot of the things Richard Gere’s character did pissed me off, I am still obsessed with the couple their characters make in this movie.
Literally the only movie from this decade on my list, Redeeming Love is one of those movies you really never forget. This one made me CRY. I’m talking full out sobs to where I was hiding my face in the margarita that I snuck into the theater (my friends thought I was sleeping, that’s how much I was hiding my face). This love story talks a lot about forgiveness and healing and how no one is ever unworthy of a second chance when they truly want it. Wow. My heart aches just thinking about it.
