My Top 20 Books of 2020
A list of my top 20 books of 2020 with authors from Emily Page to Colleen Hoover to Simone St. James. These are all the books that I enjoyed the most from 2020. Let me know in the comments if any of these are on your list for favorite reads 🙂
All Your Perfects by Colleen Hoover
Colleen Hoover’s All Your Perfects went through the ins and outs of marriage and some of the things that couples have to do with, including fertility issues. Reading this novel broke my heart, but I’d read it again in a heartbeat.
The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes by Suzanne Collins
Suzanne Collins’ prequel to The Hunger Games left me giddy in terms of finding out about characters’ backstories and how the memorable songs that Katniss sung came to be. I loved being able to go back to that world and enjoy it from another point of view. You can read my full review here.Â
Be Not Far From Me by Mindy McGinnis
Mindy McGinnis’ writing was remarkable in The Female of the Species, and while Be Not Far From Me wasn’t as highly rated, I still completely loved it. It tells the story of a girl who gets lost in the wilderness with a dangerous injury, and must find her way back before it’s too late.
Beach Read by Emily Henry
I’ve never read any novels by Emily Henry before Beach Read, and I have to say, I seriously enjoyed this book. It’s about writers who have writers block, and let me tell you, it is so relatable. The characters were amazing and developed and the plot kept me entertained the whole time.
Breathless by Jennifer Niven
Jennifer Niven stole everyone’s heart with All the Bright Places and now she’s back to steal it again. I loved Breathless. I loved how it wasn’t this perfect little romance, wrapped and gifted with a bow. It felt real and honest and beautiful.
A Good Girl's Guide to Murder by Holly Jackson
Where to even begin? A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder had me staying up just to finish it! Pip is now one of my favorite fictional characters and I just love her development along the way. The mystery was solid and so well threaded together that I felt like I was in a true crime show. Read my review of A Good Girl’s Guide to Murder here.
The Grace Year by Kim Liggett
Wow. This book was so unexpected, but in the good way. It felt like reading The Hunger Games for the first time and knowing that you’ve found something special. This whole book had me intrigued and rooting for the main character. Read my full review of this amazing book here.
The Hand on the Wall by Maureen Johnson
Oh how I loved the Truly Devious series. It was so fun and mysterious and I had to preorder this book just to make sure I got it the second it came out. If you have read this series, I highly recommend it if you enjoy mysteries!
An Inquiry into Love and Death by Simone St. James
Can I just preface this with the fact that I LOVE Simone St. James. Her novels are my favorites and this was the last one on my list of her novels to read. It was beautiful and everything that I expected from this author, and actually turned out to be one of my favorites by her (number one being The Broken Girls). Think: ghosts, love stories, and strong heroines.
The Lying Woods by Ashley Elston
I read Ashley Elston’s novel This is Our Story in 2019 and I love her writing. The Lying Woods was no different and actually had my mouth gaping at a plot twist that happened towards the end. The family ties, the lies, the deceit, it all gave me chills!
The Murder List by Hank Phillippi Ryan
This was actually one of the books that I read for the book club that I’m in. It was extremely well written, but I have to admit, I saw the plot twist coming. Other than that, the characters were beautifully written and I often found myself trying to plot out the case with them as they did all of the detective work.
The Other Miss Bridgerton by Julia Quinn
I started reading Julia Quinn with the Rokesby series. I honestly find this series to be more entertaining than the Bridgerton one. This one is about Poppy Bridgerton and I found it immensely entertaining and fun. The romance, as always, had me swooning.
The Silent Patient by Alex Michaelides
This book threw me for a loop more than once. I always found myself saying, “Oh yeah, he/she did it. They’re definitely the bad guy.” Then I was always proven wrong. This is an awesome novel that will leave you guessing until the very end.
Something Happened to Ali Greenleaf by Hayley Krischer
I’ve been waiting for this book to come out for a while if I’m being completely honest. The complex storyline and subject matter really gets my brain moving, but that’s what I loved about it. It details things in a way that brings to light all of the stigmas surrounding rape and I think it is so important to understand that. You can read my full review here.Â
Stolen Things by R.H. Herron
Stolen Things was a novel that I took a chance on. I absolutely loved the cover art, and I was due for a good crime-mystery-drama, so I dove in. I definitely wasn’t disappointed. Although there were parts in this book that definitely aren’t for the faint of heart, I recommend it to everyone who loves crime books!
The Sun Down Motel by Simone St. James
Once again, Simone St. James is amazing. I loved this mystery and all of the questions that came while I was reading it. Simone St. James so effortlessly weaves together the supernatural and the natural for a novel that is something in between. It makes her novels a roller coaster ride that I never want to miss.Â
The Tales of Beadle the Bard by JK Rowling
This was one of my more relaxed reads last year. JK Rowling wrote this short novella to give everyone the same childhood fairytales that Ron Weasley had. It was interesting hearing the references to the Wizard World and I seriously enjoyed the production on Audible.
That's Not What Happened by Kody Keplinger
For the last few years, I’ve swayed into more contemporary reads. This one follows Leanne Bauer as she recovers from the trauma of a school shooting and losing her best friend in the aftermath. That’s not all. Word has somehow gotten around that her best friend was a martyr, but that’s simply not what happened. How does Leanne go about telling the truth when no one wants to hear it?
This Time Next Year by Sophie Cousens
Not gonna lie, this was probably my favorite romance novel of the year. This Time Next Year follows two people who were born on the same day, but one stole all the luck. It was absolutely amazing and reminded me a lot of how I view luck. A good read if you want to be reminded about the good things in life.
Verity by Colleen Hoover
Holy cow. Colleen Hoover has done it again, except this time, she’s gone into the thriller, mystery, blow-your-socks off genre. I can’t tell you how many times I sat there questioning myself, the main character, the side characters, the plot. It was all so amazing and I was on the tips of my toes the whole entire time. This is a mystery novel that you won’t regret.
