Tier Ranking My Favorite Book Series From High School

So, ever since I found tiermaker.com, I’ve been obsessed with ranking books that I’ve read. I’ve ranked Colleen Hoover’s books (one of my most popular posts), and I can promise you that this won’t be the last tier ranking post that I make. Today, I have a post tier ranking book series that were super popular when I was in high school. I’ve at least partially read all of these series, but can’t say that I’ve finished them. Below you can check out the different tiers I’ve made to rank each one 🙂

So, I broke this list up into seven different tiers. For my top, number one, absolute favorite tier is “I’ll Never Forget You.” Under that, we have “Still Close to My Heart,” “Never Finished But Still Good,” “Meh” (because there always has to be a “meh” category), “Not That Great,” “Never Finished From Utter Boredom,” and “Never Even Started.”

I'll Never Forget You

The Selection Series by Kiera Cass

If there’s a series from high school that I can look back on and say, “I’d totally read that again and it wouldn’t ruin a thing now that I’ve grown up,” it would definitely be this series. Like “The Bachelor” but much much better, The Selection will have you swooning.

The Program Series by Suzanne Young

My legitimate favorite book series in high school that actually made me bawl my eyes out like a freaking baby. The first two books? A masterpiece of emotion and love and literally all of the things that make a novel worthwhile. I still think about this series to this day.

The Ruby Red Series by Kerstin Gier

Another series that stole my heart, when I read Ruby Red, I literally finished the last two books in the trilogy within the weekend. It was that good. Do I regret reading it so fast and not savoring it more? Maybe a little. Do I want to read it again? 100%.

The Delirium Series by Lauren Oliver

A world where love is banned and considered an illness, Delirium is perfect for hopeless romantics and dystopian lovers alike. Much like The Program, Delirium is another forbidden love novel. I can’t tell you how exciting it was reading this series about a girl who falls in love and has to fight to not be forced into basically a freaking lobotomy. It was brutal.

The Harry Potter Series by JK Rowling

Honestly, do I even need to write a description for this one? Capturing literally everyone’s childhood and making it magical, our “chosen one,” Harry Potter, will live on in our hearts forever.

Still Close to My Heart

The Starbound Series by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner

I was obsessed with these books once I read the first one. They were otherworldly and my favorite of the “space” series that we got a lot of in high school.

The Legend Series by Marie Lu

I remember being in love with the main characters for this novel. The love. The betrayal. The absolute action and adventure in these novels. You really didn’t get much better than these.

The Uglies Series by Scott Westerfield

I really loved The Uglies. I remember not liking it as much, though, with the last few books, which is why it ended up here instead of in the tier above. Basically it’s just a bunch of people getting plastic surgery if we’re being honest…. haha.

The Shiver Series by Maggie Stiefvater

Everyone was O B S E S S E D with this series in high school and I hopped on the bandwagon a little later than everyone else. But, there was a reason why everyone loved these so much. With humans who turn into wolves and a girl in love with one of those wolves, it makes for a very interesting “doomed” love story.

The Hunger Games Series by Suzanne Collins

There’s not a lot that I can say about this series that people won’t already know. It became popular when I was in high school and we actually went on a field trip to see the first movie after we had finished the first book. Side note: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is getting it’s own movie!

The Matched Series by Ally Condie

Another “forbidden love” trilogy, Matched originally attracted me because of its gorgeous cover (and the progressing covers throughout the series are equally as beautiful), but once I started reading, I fell in love with the story too.

Never Finished But Still Good

Across the Universe Series by Beth Revis

I read the first novel for this series and just never had time to get to the second or third when I was in high school. By the time I had gotten back into reading, it had been so long that I just didn’t want to pick the series back up. It was still a really good first novel, though!

Unwind Series by Neal Shusterman

Another one where I only read the first novel, Unwind was thought provoking and absolutely heart wrenching at times. Although, I never finished it just due to the transition from high school to college.

The Perfect Chemistry Series by Simone Elkeles

Sooo, this is obviously becoming a trend, but I only read the first one here too. In my defense, this isn’t technically a “series”, but following new stories with each book. The first book did make me swoon, though, not gonna lie.

Virals Series by Kathy Reichs

Ha. Um… yeah, guess how many novels I read in this series? Just one…. But I swear I really do think these series are good! I just never got the chance to finish them. This is also a “humans turning in wolves/hybrids” series that seemed to be very popular at the time. This has more mystery than romance, though.

Meh

Lorien Legacies Series by Pittacus Lore

I never really finished this series, but if I would have not put it in this category, I would have had to make a tier just for it. Because it wasn’t utter boredom that made me stop reading. It was just… meh. Does that even make sense? Didn’t finish reading because meh?

Life As We Knew It Series by Susan Beth Pfeffer

This series had so much potential. Literally it totally would’ve ended up a tier higher had it not been for the last freaking book. Check out the first book, second, or even the third. Just don’t read the last one.

Twilight Saga by Stephenie Meyer

I am not one of those people who hate on Twilight to the point where I’m actually loathing it. I remember liking the books. There were a lot of things, though, that I totally cringe at now. Which is why it earned its spot in the “Meh” category. Don’t think I’d ever be able to reread this series.

Divergent Series by Veronica Roth

Unpopular opinion: I actually liked the ending of Allegiant. No one else I know did like it. The reason it’s in meh, though, is because besides the ending and the factions, I can’t remember much about this series. Sad that they didn’t finish the movies, though.

The Mortal Instruments Series by Cassandra Clare

Now, I know people are going to disagree with me here, but this series just felt so long. The writing was amazing. The plot was amazing. I loved the characters (well, most of them). But towards the fourth ish book I found myself only reading the novels to see the series through. Did anyone else feel like that?

The Maximum Ride Series by James Patterson

The very first series that I fell in love with as a kid, Maximum Ride: The Angel Experiment was thrilling and so much fun to read. The only problem? They dragged out the series for so freaking long. It wasn’t necessary and it completely ruined my favorite characters. I think there’s even a spinoff series, but I can’t say that I’ll ever read it.

Not That Great

The Summer I Turned Pretty Series by Jenny Han

I might get a lot of hate for this, but this was such a mediocre series for me. I just finished the entire series less than a year ago, but it was hugely popular in high school. The Summer I Turned Pretty, It’s Not Summer Without You, and We’ll Always Have Summer were cutesy summer books, but a little too juvenile and random in some of its plot points. It’s not bad necessarily… just not good either.

Never Finished From Utter Boredom

Witch & Wizard Series by James Patterson

I got through the first, second, and maybe, maybe, halfway through the third. It started out strong, but fizzled off after the first three books in my opinion.

Magyk Series by Septimus Heap

To be completely honest, I read the first book and can’t even remember most of it. It just never interested me enough for me to continue with the series.

Beautiful Creatures Series by Kami Garcia and Margaret Stohl

I really did try to finish this series. I got halfway through Beautiful Chaos and just couldn’t finish it. Don’t even ask me to pinpoint exactly what it was. I think it was maybe Lena going to the “dark side” because after that, I lost all interest.

Evermore Series by Alyson Noel

Felt a little too similar to Twilight in the first book, so I never went and read the others in the series.

Never Even Started

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants Series by Ann Brashares

I’ve heard such good things about this series, I just never got the chance to read them. But I have watched the movies… haha.

The Percy Jackson and the Olympians Series by Rick Riordan

I swear, I can’t even count the amount of times my brother tried to get me to read this series. I don’t think Greek mythology was really my thing (and still isn’t). Closest I’ve gotten to Greek mythology is probably The Maidens by Alex Michaelides.

The Maze Runner Series by James Dashner

I definitely watched all the movies, but never got into the books. I think I had tried to start them at one point, but never got past the first paragraph…. Through no fault of the author, though!!

The 5th Wave Series

All I can honestly tell you about this series is that they made a movie with Chloe Grace Moretz. And that it might be about aliens?

So there you have it. That’s my ranking for all of the popular book series from when I was in high school. Honestly, I forgot most of these existed until I started prep for this post and video. I’m happy to say, though, that it was a pretty nostalgic trip down memory lane.

Which series from high school were your favorite? Did I forget any super popular ones?
